How to export a WhatsApp chat, and what you can learn from it

WhatsApp can export any chat as a text file. If you work with someone mostly over WhatsApp, that file is a record of how the two of you communicate.

What's in the file

A .txt file (sometimes inside a .zip) with one line per message: the date, the time, who sent it and the text. Without media, photos, voice notes and other attachments are left out. WhatsApp notes that an exported chat is a text file, not a backup, so it can't be imported back into WhatsApp.

What a work chat can tell you

  • What the other person asks for: details, decisions, reassurance, speed.
  • How they disagree: directly, with questions, or by going quiet.
  • Which of your messages got a quick, clear answer, and which didn't.

Get a read from the chat

Add the exported chat to Sixen and get a read on how the other person communicates, the moments behind it, and two or three ways to approach them next time. Sixen reads the text only, never photos or voice notes. Only you see it, and you can delete it at any time.

Get early access

Sixen is invite-only while we open it to a small group. Leave your email and we'll send you an invite.

We only use your email to send you an invite, and delete it after that or after 12 months.
